Makrana, a city in Indian State of Rajasthan, is known for its flawless white and other color marbles. It is also famous for its craftsmen who create mosaic work of art, inlaid with semiprecious stones on white marble. This art form has been handed down for many generations since Mughal era 350 years ago. Wonder of the world is done with same intricate craftmanship. All the tabletops shown here are done by descendants of old masters. First a pattern(kind of a map) is laid out on a suitable white marble piece. Craftsman than carve out grooves to inlay colorful semiprecious stones. Small pieces of precious stones like lapis lazuli, malachite, mother of pearl, jasper, agates and more are cut to shape and glued in the grooves. A small flower can have as many as 50 pieces of stones of different colors in it. Even the hair thin branches connecting flowers are actually inlaid stones. Once all the grooves in the design are filled with stones the resulting surface is polished to a high shine. This not only brings out natural beauty of the stones but the surface also becomes as smooth as glass. Anything spilled over the surface can be swiped away. Another characteristic of white marble is, it is translucent, while the inlaid stones are opaque, so if lit from under the table, one can see the entire inlaid pattern as silhouette.
